S.Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia faced De Mazenod College, Kandana in a 1st XI fifty over tournament game. The match was played at Kandana on the 3rd of October, 2022. The captain of De Mazenod College won the toss and elected to field first.
The Thomians, who were sent into bat put up a dominant batting display. Captain, Romesh Mendis topped the run charts for the Thomians and went onto pile up a record 166 runs off just 139 balls. The action-packed innings comprised 12 fours and 6 sixes. Romesh went onto surpass the previous highest individual in the fifty over competition and registered his name right on top of that list. Contributions from Avinash Fernando (55) and Thisen Eheliyagoda (25) helped the Thomians accumulate a total of 307 runs in 49.5 overs. Thushan Umayanga was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up 3 wickets for 38 runs.
In reply, De Mazenod College couldn’t gather any momentum and struggled to build any significant partnerships. Despite some resistance by Uvindu Perera (19) and Thushan Udayanga (18), De Mazenod College struggled against wrist spinner, Rajindu Tillakaratne. Tillakaratne was able to deliver an outstanding spell and picked up 5 wickets for just 15 runs. Ashen Perera also chipped in with two wickets and De Mazenod College was bundled out for 82 runs in 28.3 overs.
A brilliant display by Romesh Mendis and Rajindu Tillakaratne ensured that the Thomian side was able to register a comprehensive victory and won the match by 225 runs.
