Bishop James Chapman Medal of Honour

This award was introduced by the present Warden at the Prize Giving for 2016, the year that the College celebrated the 165th anniversary of our foundation, not only to remember our revered Founder, Bishop James Chapman, the 1st Anglican Bishop of Colombo, but also to recognize a student who exemplifies and demonstrates what the citation that accompanies the Medal states, “the values of faith, courage, service above self, loyalty, and integrity” and thus fulfils the Founder’s Vision of education:

“The real end of all education, is not to sharpen the intellect or improve the mind alone, but to form the character of the future man, To mould his habits, to fix his principals, and to make him good as well as wise”

Bishop James Chapman.

The Citation is always handed over by the Bishop of Colombo while the Medal itself is presented to the recipient by the Warden. Not all the winners have been Head Prefects and at least two were selected on their exceptional qualities displayed

This year’s (2022) recipient chosen by the Warden, Janidhu Nisakjith Dela (who happens to also be Head Prefect of the College), has been recognized as one who has fulfilled the criteria for the award in more ways than one. He has shown himself to be authentic in his dealings with all and as a student leader has shown himself to be reflective, friendly, firm and fair while displaying a sense of integrity that is getting rarer and rarer in this modern day.
