After a very short break between seasons, the Thomian Cricketers are back on the field and ready to take on any opposition in the upcoming 2022/2023 cricket season, with Romesh Mendis as the Captain of the 1st XI team.
Romesh Mendis hails from a remarkable cricketing family. His father Manoj Mendis maintains legendary status in cricketing folklore at STC, having not only captained STC in 1994, but also having the infallable record of scoring 2 consecutive centuries at the Royal Thomian, including one on debut, as well as the record for the highest score by a debutant, among many others. His grandfather is known to be one of the best 1st class cricketers of the day and his granduncle is none other than the legendary Duleep Mendis, who also has a similar record to that of Manoj at STC, and also went on to Captain Sri Lanka in Test Cricket.
Romesh becomes the first Thomian Cricketer since 1992 to follow in the footsteps of his father as Captain of the 1st XI Team, when the late Suresh Goonesekere followed his father, the late Mr. Premalal Goonesekere, who was captain of the winning side in 1964.
Romesh, a hard hitting right handed batsman with an impressive record, is supported by a strong contingent of players which boasts of 10 coloursmen this year. Many of these boys have been involved in the ongoing Under 15 and Under 17 season. The Under 15 team reached the semi finals this year, only to be defeated in a rain interrupted game by St. Anthony’s College Kandy, on bonus points. The Under 17 team is scheduled to face off with Trinity College Kandy in the Semi Finals at Surrey Village, Maggona on the 18th of September, having beaten St. Peter’s College in the Quater Finals earlier this week.
The 1st XI season kicks off this Saturday, the 10th of September at Mt Lavinia, when College takes on Gurukula Vidyalaya in the curtain raiser of the Limited Over competition. The two day segment of the season, which includes Tournament games and Traditional games will commence after the conclusion of the Limited Over competition.
