After their recent success at the Football Divisionals tournament, the Thomian First XI and Under 18 Football teams qualified for the Football Zonals tournament which took place on Friday, the 19th of August 2022.
The Tournament began with the Under 20 team, led by Mahith Perera, coming up against Hermann Gmeiner School Piliyandala, whom they defeated 1-0 with the sole goal being scored by Aakash Goonetilleka. Thereafter, the team went on to defeat St.Sebastian’s College Moratuwa, in a game which was decided on penalties as both sides ended the game on zero.
The Thomians concluded their successful campaign by facing up against Lalith Athulathmudali College Mount Lavinia in the finals of the Zonals Tournament. Once again, the game ended in penalties with the Thomians emerging victorious as Zonal Champions, thus booking their place in the Provincials Tournament.
The Under 18 team was able to enjoy similar success under the leadership of Sashenka Fernando as they defeated Christ King College 1-0 in their opening game with Ethan Lawrence scoring the sole goal. Subsequently, they went on to defeat Lalith Athulathmudali College 2-0 with goals being scored by E.N. Lawrence and M.M.Mukthar respectively.
The finals of the Under 18 Zonals tournament is scheduled to take place later this week, with the Thomians hoping they can replicate the success of their Under 20 team as they face Alethea International Dehiwala for the coveted title of Zonal Champions.
