The 2022 Zonal Athletics meet was held from the 6th to the 9th of September at St Sebastian’s College grounds with 45 schools participating. The Thomian Athletics team emerged 1st runners up with 53 College Athletes qualifying for the Western Provincial meet happening later this year.
Many College athletes managed to not only qualify but even attain positions in their respective events both on the track and in the field.
Track
- Athletics Captain S.P.Perera led the Thomian track results by emerging 3rd in the 100m race and 2nd in both 200m and 400m races of the U20 age category. The immense hard work that he put in clearly translated to results on the track. He is an excellent example for those who lead by example in the athletics world and we look forward to his performance on the provincial stage.
- L.T.R Eheliyagoda emerged 2nd in the U18 100m race as well while,
- P.H.S.S Silva emerged 3rd in the U14 100m race.
Overall the track team achieved great results at the Zonal meet this year
Field
The team achieved outstanding results in fields events this year;
- L.M.T Weerasinghe dominated the U20 category in both Shot Putt and Discus throw coming in 1st for both events while A.G. Fernando came in 1st for both events in the U18 category.
- The Head Prefect J.N. Dela achieved 2nd place in U20 javelin throw with M. Stephen coming in 3rd
- A young Thomian D.V.S Peiris emerged 1st in long jump in the U12 category
- Meanwhile D.C.B Purijjala acquired 3rd place in both discus throw and javelin throw in the U18 age category while R.M Senevirathne acquired 2nd place in triple jump in the same age category
- M. Ali emerged 3rd in the U20 Shot Putt event as well
Relay
The team also excelled in relay events during this meet;
- The U20 4x400m relay teem comprised of S.P Perera, D.H Perera, D.A.J Colombege and R.N.K.H Ramanayaka emerged 1st in the U20 catgeory
- The U20 4x100m relay team acquired 2nd place as well
- The relay teams were strong in U18 as well with both 4x100m and 4x400m teams achieving 2nd place
- In U16 the 4x100m team and 4x400m teams emerged 2nd and 3rd respectively
- Our U14 4x100m team placed 2nd while the U12 4x50m team emerged 3rd
The Thomian athletes pulled off an amazing performance in the relay races with a placement in at least 1 relay race in every age group
Overall the College Athletes did a splendid job at the Zonals and we would like to congratulate them for their achievements and also wish the athletics captain S.P Perera and the rest of the athletes who qualified the very best for the upcoming Western Province meet.
