Romesh Mendis’s brilliance was not enough to save S.Thomas’

The College 1st XI Cricket Team took on Gurukula College in a limited-overs encounter at the Big Club Grounds on the 10th of September.

The Thomians were put into bat and found themselves in a spot of bother, with Senadhi Bulankulame, Thisen Eheliyagoda and Dineth Gunawardena being dismissed early on in the Thomian innings. The Thomian Skipper walked in and put on a show of pure Thomian Grit by not giving away his wicket and trying to salvage something from the Thomian Innings. Despite Mendis trying to hold the Thomian innings together, he was unable to find a consistent partner as the Thomian middle order completely collapsed. The Thomians also had to cope with a low strike rate as the Gurukula bowlers and fielders did not allow runs to flow easily. The Thomians were given a glimmer of hope with Akash Fernando, but he was dismissed just past the quarter of the century mark by Poorna Kalhara. Ultimately, Romesh Mendis also had to head back to the dressing room just four runs short of his fifty, thanks to some magnificent bowling by Janitha Shehan, who received the Man of the Match award. The Thomians ended their innings cheaply at 142 all out after 46.2 overs.

The Thomians had a mammoth task on their hands as they had to restrict Gurukula College to a run rate less than three an over. Thomian bowlers Dineth Goonewardena and Charuka Peiris were particularly impressive as both had an economy rate below two runs and were able to get in a couple of maiden overs with Charuka Peiris being able to get two scalps as well. Akash Fernando was also able to claim 2 wickets. Still, the Thomian bowling attack could not contain the men from Peliyagoda as they were able to reach the target of 143 despite an early scare of losing 2 wickets for just 6 runs.

Match Result STC – 142/10 ( 46.2 Overs )
Gurukula College – 146/5 (47.3 Overs )

Guruka College won by 5 wickets.
