The 11th Annual Trinity – Thomian Football encounter was held at the Big Club Grounds of S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia on the 14th of September 2022. This encounter comprised of the under 16 encounter, the old boys encounter and the under 19 encounter. Mr. Janesh Ratnadasa, an old Thomian was invited as the Chief Guest of this event.
The first match between the Trinitians and the Thomians was the under-16 encounter. Before halftime, the Trinitians had scored two goals which were scored within a gap of 5 minutes. At the end of the match, the Trinitians had won by scoring four goals, with S.N. Gunawardene and F.M. Amar scoring 1 goal each while M.A.Shan netted twice. M.A.Shan would go on to become the man of the match. The Thomians were able to get a consolation goal as captain Nevanjith Madawela converted from a set piece.
Next was the Old Boys encounter between the two schools. The score was 0-0 at the end of the first half. The start of the second half saw a rejuvenated Thomian side as they scored three goals and claimed victory for the team. V. Somalingakumar, A. Fernando and D.Dias scored a goal each and won the old boys encounter by 3-0.
Lastly, the day’s most prominent match was the under-19 encounter between Trinity College, Kandy and S. Thomas College, Mount Lavinia. This match was intense as both teams were fighting hard to score. Thomian center backs Jaden Rodrigo and Steyn Devasagayam ensured a strong Trinitian attack but could not find the back of the net. However, the Thomians were saved on countless occasions by goalkeeper Shreshta Anthonisz. Still, when the Thomians started to play strategically with Kaveesh Kamalachandra and Shivane Perera being particularly effective in the middle of the park, they were able to generate a significant amount of chances for their forward players. This climaxed in Ahmadh Mukthar netting twice and skipper Mahith Perera netting once. The Trinitians tried their best to defend but were unable to fight against the pace and superb passing of the Thomian attack.
The Thomians emerged triumphant at the end of the game with the scoreline standing 3-0. Shreshta Anthoniz was awarded the best goalkeeper award, while Ahmadh Mukthar was able to claim the Man of the Match award due to his excellent performance leading the Thomian front line.
