Debating- Thomian wins the best speaker award at SLSDC

The Sri Lanka Schools Debating Competition (SLSDC), organised by the Law Faculty of the University of Colombo, was held between the 27th of August and the 4th of September.

This is considered to be Sri Lanka’s most important and coveted English Debating tournament which involves almost 40 leading schools across the country and is known for being of a very high standard of Debating.

The Thomian debating captain Nevan Serasundera was adjudged ‘Best Speaker’ at the tournament, as he topped the table in the tournament. His performance at this tournament is a testament to the hours upon hours of practice put in by our boys, in order to fine tune their skills and bring glory to college. Serasundera’s performance at this tournament reaffirms the legacy established by College in the field of debate.

Serasundera is the first Thomian to win this award in this particular tournament after Mr. Sanjit Dias who won it last in 2012. He is also the first Thomian in five years to win best speaker at a Tournament after Mr.Senal Hewage became best speaker at the Lillian Nixon debating competition in 2017.

Winning the title “Best Speaker” in a tournament on a scale such as this is indeed an amazing feat. Furthermore, it has certainly motivated the entire team to push their limits and put in the required effort to strive to improve and maintain the standard of excellence and even raise the bar.
